Why React Native teams choose Detox
Black-box mobile tools see your app from the outside, so they guess when it's ready. Detox is gray-box: it runs alongside your app and knows when animations, timers, network calls and the React Native bridge are idle, then acts. Most of the flakiness people associate with mobile testing goes away.
Tests are written in JavaScript or TypeScript with Jest, the same language your React Native team already uses, which makes it realistic for developers to write and maintain them.
What we build
Framework setup
Detox config, Jest runner, device profiles and test IDs in the app.
Critical journeys
Onboarding, login, purchase and core features on both platforms.
Mocking strategy
Mock servers and native-module stubs for deterministic runs.
Device and OS coverage
Simulator and emulator matrices matched to your user base.
CI pipelines
Cached builds, parallel workers, artefacts and retries kept honest.
Sync debugging
Fixing apps that never go idle, such as endless animations or polling.
How we keep suites stable
- testID everywhere: Stable identifiers on key elements, agreed with your developers.
- Release builds for tests: Tests run against production-like builds, not slow debug builds.
- Isolated test data: Each test creates its own data so runs can execute in parallel.
- Blacklist noisy URLs: Analytics and long-polling endpoints are excluded from sync.
- Small, focused tests: One behaviour per test, so failures point straight at the problem.
Detox or Appium?
- Choose Detox: For React Native apps where speed, stability and developer ownership matter most.
- Choose Appium: For native or mixed apps, real-device clouds, or teams writing tests in Java or Python.
- Use both: Detox for fast PR checks, Appium for a wider real-device regression run.
- Not sure?: We'll recommend one after a short look at your app and team.
Where it fits
Detox work usually sits inside a broader QA automation engagement, with API testing for the backend your app depends on and Appium where real-device coverage is needed. See our QA automation, API testing and performance testing services.
